What are dealer add-ons?
Written by RD Matharu, Founder of ASK RD · Published
Dealer add-ons are products, packages and services added to a vehicle transaction beyond the vehicle itself. Common examples include appearance or protection packages, paint and fabric treatments, window tint, nitrogen tire service, theft-deterrent products, service contracts and GAP coverage.
Most add-ons are optional. The practical task is to identify each one, learn what it covers, and decide whether you want it — before it is financed across a 72-month term.
What it means
Some add-ons are installed on the vehicle before you arrive, which is why a dealership may describe them as already part of the car. Others are offered in the finance office as coverage products.
Why it matters
An add-on package raises the financed balance, and interest applies to it for the whole term. A product you did not want is a cost you carry for years.
Questions to ask
- 01Is this required, or optional?
- 02What exactly does it cover, and for how long?
- 03Can I decline it?
- 04Is it already included in the selling price, or added on top?
- 05What does it cost as a separate line?
- 06If I decline it, what does the amount financed become?
When ASK RD can help
ASK RD identifies each optional product on your paperwork and gives you these questions with your own figures attached. It does not label a product overpriced without evidence on the page to support that.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a pre-installed package cannot be discussed.
- Buying coverage without reading what it excludes.
- Judging an add-on by its monthly impact instead of its price.
Frequently asked questions
What is a dealer add-on?
An optional product, package or service added to a vehicle deal beyond the vehicle itself, such as a protection package, service contract or GAP coverage.
Can I negotiate dealer add-ons?
Often yes — you can ask for a product to be removed or repriced. Ask for a revised buyer's order showing the new amount financed before you agree.
