What dealer fees should I question?

Written by RD Matharu, Founder of ASK RD · Published

Fees on a car deal fall into two groups. Government fees — title, registration, license and taxes — are set by your state and passed through. Dealer-charged fees, such as documentation or processing fees, are set by the dealership.

Question any fee you cannot place in one of those two groups, any fee that is not separately named, and any dealer fee whose purpose has not been explained to you in plain language.

What it means

  • Documentation / processing fee — a dealer charge for preparing paperwork. Some states cap it; many do not.
  • Title, registration and license fees — government charges to put the vehicle in your name.
  • Taxes — set by your state and locality, calculated on a taxable base that varies by state.
  • Non-tax fees — a catch-all line some dealerships use for smaller pass-through charges. Ask what is inside it.

Why it matters

Fees are financed along with the vehicle, so a fee does not just raise your total — it also accrues interest across the term.

Questions to ask

  • Is this fee a government charge or a dealership charge?
  • What exactly does this fee cover?
  • Is this fee the same for every customer at this store?
  • Can you show me this fee broken out rather than bundled?

When ASK RD can help

ASK RD reads each fee line as printed and tells you which ones need an explanation. It does not declare a fee illegal or improper — that depends on your state and the facts of the transaction.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every fee is negotiable, or that none are.
  • Accepting a single bundled fee total without a breakdown.
  • Focusing on a small fee while a large add-on goes unquestioned.

Frequently asked questions

Are dealer documentation fees negotiable?

It depends on the dealership and, in some states, on a legal cap. Ask whether the fee can be reduced or offset elsewhere in the deal, and get any change in writing.

Why do fees increase my amount financed?

Fees are added to the transaction before the balance is calculated, so unless you pay them in cash they are financed with the vehicle.
